Six months before construction
Six months before you’d like the project to start, start interviewing contractors. Also form a solid idea of what you want the final product to look like.
Look through magazines and websites for inspiration. You may even find it helpful to make a scrapbook of ideas that really catch your eye.
Three months before construction
Three months before your project starts, nail down your budget. Decide on your must-haves, and use that list to guide any splurges.
Talk to your contractor to get a time estimate of when they’ll be able to get started. When you have your timetable, you’ll be able to account for how long you’ll be without a bathroom and figure out how to make any necessary arrangements.
Two months before construction
Two months out (at least!), order fixtures, vanities, and cabinets. Check order fulfillment times to make sure everything will arrive on time. Your contractor will be a helpful source of information here. They will most likely know which vendors and suppliers have supply chain difficulties.
One month before construction
This is the time to settle on new paint colors. Also shop for accessories and towel bars. Stay in touch with your contractor during this time. Let them know where to find everything they’ll need and communicate any ideas or concerns you have. This will help ensure everyone’s on the same page when work starts.
Demo day
This is when the fun starts! Demolition is the first step in the construction phase. Demo can take less than a day or a few days. It all depends on the extent of your remodel.
Renovation
Once demo is finished, the remodeling and rebuilding can start. If the layout of the space is changing, that construction will take a week or so. Moving plumbing and electrical usually takes a little longer.
After all the utilities are in the right place and the structural work is done, your contractor will start on the next step. The crew will install insulation and vapor barrier. Then, they’ll hang and mud the drywall.
Once the drywall is finished and has dried, the crew can move forward with finishes. This is when tile, flooring, cabinets, countertops, and fixtures are installed. Tiling typically takes the most time, but it needs to be done well. The extra time is well worth it.

Your Remodeled Bathroom
Home renovation projects always come with a little bit of stress. You’re relying on other people to turn your vision into reality, after all. And to do that, they’re making a huge mess!
But when you work with an experienced contractor, you can rest assured that the end result will be something you love. Stay in close contact with your contractor through the planning and construction phases. And don’t be afraid to speak up if something doesn’t look right. Your contractor wants you to love your new bathroom, so they need to know if you have questions or concerns.
Above all, try to stay flexible through the project. Timelines and schedules help keep everyone on the same page, but some things are out of everyone’s control.
