“Alliance painting was wonderful from the start. From the salesperson to the scheduler and of course the painting crew were excellent. I had to cancel the start date twice but Alliance hung in there for me. The project manager and lead painter did a final walkthrough a few days after paint had cured. Very thorough and great job.”

“We were promised a lot up front and were happy to pay extra for a better paint job. In practice, though, those things didn't happen, and then we were treated like asking for them to happen was an add-on that they weren't willing to do. We ended up with some of the items taken care of, but on the whole, I wish we had gone with Certa Painters, who had given us an identical quote. The highly-touted prep work just didn't happen. They just painted over peeling paint and rusty nails, there was not much sanding or scraping, they didn't fill in old nail holes, etc. I'm not impressed.”

“I emailed this same statement to the owner of Alliance Painting, Ryan Anderson, on Saturday August 12th and never heard back. This process was awful for a multitude of reasons, mainly being that the project proposal is/was NOT fulfilled by Alliance Painting to the standards set by their contract, and is a direct result of poor project management, lack of oversight, and failings by subcontractors. I have pictures of each problem area I can provide as needed. Here's an overview: Beth in the office was generally unhelpful. When I attempted to ask for assistance choosing colors she was on vacation, and no one took over for her. She didn't answer my questions when she got back into the office so I didn't have any assistance when picking out a stain as requested. After that, multiple times the color form received from her was incorrect and was missing file extensions. Waiting on her to remedy this caused delays getting and approving color forms. I eventually had to make my own because waiting on her was dragging out the color approval process. File extensions on the documents were repeatedly missing that she sent me so they would not open. I explained that her files were missing extensions (.pdf/.docx/.png) and asked for one I could open as I was mobile but they still had no extension. I had to guess what file extension they were in order to then review color forms sent by Beth; I would have to download them to my computer and change the file type manually - as it's not something feasible on Mobile. It's not my job to be IT support for this company. Stanley the "Project Manager" who showed up day one then never again, and was not familiar with my project, colors, or anything that had been discussed or asked before. The color diagram I created and emailed to Beth he didn't have. Questions I asked Beth that she said he would answer, but he didn't. He strongly recommended, saying it would be better for the crew due to the heat, that the drip cap for the roof was painted, and that the hardware would not be painted. He stated that this would ensure a better outcome for everyone because of the heat and less labor. It didn't, and I felt pressured by him to make this choice. I didn't see or hear from him again after the first morning, he completely went MIA. I was home everyday, all day, as I work from home. However, the original crew would/could not communicate with me. If you have a Spanish-speaking only crew that is fine, but there needs to be a bilingual adult employed by Alliance to act as liaison. I got texted to unlock a door I had already told them repeatedly was left unlocked so they could open it, and so they could come inside to cool down and use the downstairs restroom. This original crew consisted of Emmanuel, his VERY young daughter, and two other young men who did not appear to know what they were doing. Emmanuel had to show them how to operate the spray washer day 1. I had neighbors mention the little girl, and make comments about child labor to me. I asked Michelle about her age and was told she had worked for Alliance for years, they got this question A LOT, and she had just recently graduated high school. Which I found concerning because if she had just graduated that meant she was still probably only 17 or 18. I understand going to work with your parents because there isn't childcare, I was one of those kids that went to work too. However I don't want some inexperienced child painting my house; it's unprofessional and embarrassing. Multiple neighbors mentioned seeing a child working on my house. The original crew cut a lot of corners. I attempted to contact Alliance and sent messages stating things that were missed (edges, corners, missing caulk seams, sloppy application, etc.) and was assured "they would get that" over text message. No Project Manager or Manager ever came out during the process to oversee what had been done, that prep was done correctly, or that the plan was being followed. After the first crew botched our house exterior, it took me calling and texting multiple times to have someone even get in contact to schedule with me when to do a walk through. This was everything from bad/uneven coverage, messy caulk lines that didn't match the paint line, bricks, gutters, and plants weren't covered or protected beforehand. The first crew repeatedly left paint cans open and unattended while they left my house and required me to go cover them up once I noticed. This was witnessed by the GM Michelle that paint cans were left open while the crew was MIA. She would not acknowledge it even after I voiced it to her and sent a message about it. Michelle, a "general Manager", came out but didn't see issues with the paint job till I started having to point them out to her. She didn't have the correct color form with her as she was purchasing more stain, I heard her say the wrong stain color name to buy so I corrected her, and she was adamant she had the right colors. She showed me a color form with tan, brown, and red, and told me that this is what I approved, but the color form wasn't mine. I had to point to the colors on the form and restate that the form she had was not mine. She then was able to find my paperwork in her car. While not a big deal, her attitude set the tone. This manager wanted to chit-chat, but when it came to the actual work was confrontational. I had to point out everything, if I didn't point to it specifically they magically didn't see any issue with it: such as the door sweep bondo'ed to the front door, uneven lines, the streaked paint finish of the door, drips down shutters, and the interior sides of objects being completely skipped because they weren't visible from the street only from indoors so they were skipped, and multiple other issues resulting from a fast and sloppy job. I provided pictures of this to Michelle. On the West side of the house where a piece of siding was supposed to be replaced there were seams on the sides before it reached the trim that confused me. I asked if there were new seams why they weren't caulked, and pointed to areas around it not sealed. Michelle seemed confused by my question and defended the work, telling me "no that was mortar, you'll need to have someone else fill in the seams with mortar" and there was nothing wrong with it. Additionally, when I showed Michelle that the slate tile top of the shelf by the front door was covered in stain drips I popped a tile up and out to show her the stain on them "well we just didn't know they did that!" she exclaimed. The point is not that the tiles come out, the point is the crew didn't protect the surfaces of the slate or brick before when they were painting. These were eventually cleaned off, but the attitude and excuse really set the tone for how she approached us and the project. My husband and I requested that there be some sort of itemized list for the painters to follow. Michelle was defensive and resistant when I pointed out issues, often making excuses for the improperly done job, or being blasé in saying "the crew will get that" but making no effort to document it or keep track other than marking near it with painters tape. Michelle did not take our request seriously. She often made excuses for the work that had been completed. She said if I could make the list and get it to Emmanuel and her that would be great. I made the list before she left my property and provided it to her via text message and to Emmanuel on paper. Additionally, Emmanuel and his crew repeatedly left paint cans open and unattended while on break or lunch, as she witnessed me covering the paint cans up myself while the crew was gone but didn't acknowledge it even when I voiced it to her as a concern. It is not my job to be your company's quality control or project manager. What is the point of the walk through or having a manager if I as the customer am doing that job? Attempt two of the house paintings was better, but there were still the same places not painted, missed, or completely not prepped and painted over peeling paint. We still have multiple areas of peeling paint edges because they were not prepped beforehand. By this point the shutters and wood have been painted so many times over that the semi-solid stain is a thick opaque paint with uneven, drippy, coverage. When Emmanuel told me he was leaving for the day and wanted me to take a look, I asked him to fix additional spots and he hastily slapped paint on a few spots on the fence as if that was the fix. I told him we would look at it when it was dry as it was already close to 7 pm. After this, Michelle and another associate came by to review the work done without the crew as planned. Michelle apologized for the poor work that was done by Emmanuel, that it was out of his character. I was informed by Michelle that Emmanuel would not be painting with Alliance any more. Michelle apologized for Alliance and Emmanuel "dropping the ball". I said it must be the heat and she said "no this was something else.'' but didn't elaborate. She also said she thought we were being taken care of but weren't and she didn't know. I was promised a new crew of "two brothers" by Michelle. However, lack of knowledge on how things should be done correctly by the Alliance team led me to have to research how to do the job myself instead in order to explain how things should be properly fixed. I again cataloged and made a list of things that needed to be remedied and this time attached an image for each line item and sent it via text to Michelle the night before meeting with the new crew for painting number attempt three. I also requested images of the chimney, but they were not provided to me at this time. The second crew and the third attempt were better, the day they came out it was three men. They were courteous and seemed motivated. They were able to identify that the siding piece on the West side of the house had not been replaced with an actual piece of Hardie Board, but had instead been replaced with some other lap board that ended before reaching the trim edge, so that it was short by about 4" on both sides. When looking at the West side of the house I pointed out the peeling edges of paint on the lap boards and in between them. I also pointed out that the paint finish was wavy and mottled. Michelle dismissed my complaint by saying "paint peels and cracks" and would not listen to me. The paint was peeling here before the paint project started, part of why we had the whole house repainted, which tells me it was never prepared by the first Alliance crew properly to begin with. I asked if it was going to be at least cleaned or prepped and Michelle said "no they will not be pressure washing" and cutting me off. This made me hesitant to even voice anything related to the project with her because she would just snap at me and dismiss it. After the third paint attempt with the second crew, they were nice and worked on the major trouble areas. Jimmy from the second crew spoke with me and understood the mottled finish issue on the West side siding and was able to get a smoother finish on it. However now there's a line where you can see it was resprayed on the bottom that runs parallel below a lap seam - this line faded a little, we hope it continues to. Unfortunately the second crew was unable to clean off a lot of the excess paint from the previous crew on the shutter hardware and as a result had to paint them all black. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem Michelle passed on the itemized list to the new crew, so things were missed again. It's better, but not right. It looked a lot better when the second crew finished late that day. We still have areas that are not up to par, such as the front door, west side siding, south side shutter sills. I waited this time for someone at Alliance to reach out and schedule which didn't happen till after the weekend. At the last walk through I had to again request images of the chimney and the install that were promised to me. Only when I asked did the second crew get up on the chimney and start caulking areas that had been missed by the first crew. During the walkthrough Michelle did not care to check the itemized list and correlating images provided to her, all she did was a cursory look around the property and see if I pointed out anything new. She would walk away while I was attempting to review the list of past issues I had made and leave me pointing out issues to no one. I was curious if she would actually clock issues and act as quality control, but she did not. It seemed to me she did not care. She seemed eager to get me to pay and then leave ASAP. I asked a question about putting the gutters up when the paint would be CURED and she repeated "the paint is dry it dries in a day or two", cutting me off and not listening to my question. We honestly gave up trying with General Manager Michelle after requesting multiple times for things to be fixed, and providing an itemized list with photos. At the time I hadn't had the time to get out on the roof myself to verify the North side of the house, but it looked better from the ground as they had removed the globs of caulking left by the previous crew. When I did go out on the roof, there was patchy paint coverage and places where the paint is speckled and flaking off. If we keep listing it and telling them in person, and it doesn't get done, well it seems like Alliance Painting must obviously not care about it, or THIS is the standard. I now believe that the good reviews are either bots, paid for, or are likely unsuspecting customers being scammed and just haven't caught the short cuts yet. I have never in my life thought I would have construction products and materials skimped on - like with the Hardie Board not actually being replaced per contract the first time. And now my main worry besides the poor quality finish is that I could find out that other products used by your company on my project were counterfeit or switched out, like with the Hardie Board siding replacement. As I mentioned above, Daniel called me August 16th. As mentioned before, he said he called to apologize and said that he would pass on what I said to the owner Ryan. I told him I also emailed Ryan about this. He said I would probably hear back sometime that week or the next week from him. He vaguely explained a bit more about what was going on with the first crew and original project manager Stanley. He said that they got rid of the first crew with Emmanuel because they were leaving job sites to work on other houses for other people around the area and taking cash on the side. Daniel said this is why Emmanuel and that crew kept leaving. He also said that Stanley had "one foot out the door" and so that was probably why no one was here to check in on the house because he had been looking for another job and didn't care. This doesn't make me feel better, it just makes me upset that they knew this was going on and let it happen anyway. They had the audacity to act like it was a problem that we had issues with the paint job.”

Response
This is Ryan responding. I have attempted to contact the client, however, she chose not to speak with me directly. She only wanted to communicate via text or email. I prefer to have direct communication so it is effective. PLEASE see attached pictures for reference of finished project. Initially, we did not perform up to our own standards and "own" the poor quality we produced. We did agree that the work was not of good workmanship and offered to fix it. Thankfully, the client did allow us to remedy the work. We left the home proud of the end result but, we feel horrible that the client had to endure multiple attempts to complete the project. We aim to get it right the first time. When we left the job the client was also happy with the result. Our explanations of the situation were not intended to draw attention away from the real problem (the paint job), we were being honest about the situation at hand. It is unfortunate and we feel horrible. I would be more then happy to have a conversation with her if she is open to it.

“The good was the pricing up front, communication, painter's attitude and communication and protection of surfaces from paint drips and spatters. The Bad, the contract states that "all previously sealed gaps between windows, doors, trim and siding planks" . That did not happen as after work was completed there were multiple areas where caulk had pulled away from mating surfaces and some were so bad I had to remove and re-caulk. Also, we had one half of a wall painted in a very dark tone and that was supposed to be primed before being painted, that did not happen and after two coats of paint there still was a difference in color. During the final walk thru my wife pointed out the difference between the top half of the wall and the bottom half. The painters applied another coat of paint which really did not make much of a difference after drying and we left it at that as we did not see that a fourth coat was going to make a difference. What really torqued my wife off was when she was told that the observed difference in shade was probably in her mind. We had other neighbors look at the wall and they could notice the difference without us pointing it out. The best thing about this experience was that being in our 70's we did not have to spend several days painting and on a ladder painting the cealing.”

“Paid a premium price expecting a great outcome. Very disappointed. Going through the 1st walk through I was amazed at the number of issues the project/production manager failed to identify. After the 2nd visit, I still found dry wall mollies in the ceiling just painted over. Holes where the curtain rods were screwed into the wall were just painted over with no spackling. Neither the lead painter nor the production/project manager said anything about these until I took photos of them and sent them to the project manager detailing those and my really big disappointment in the crown molding. After the 3rd attempt, and me providing a very small screw driver and explaining how to remove the dry wall molly from the ceiling, those issues were fixed to my satisfaction. But not the crown molding, they didn't know how to fix it. This has been dragging on for 4 weeks.”
