I've used JL Closets three separate times because their pricing is very competitive, especially with the solid repeat-customer discount – that's honestly the main reason I keep coming back. The work always gets done and the final product is good, but every job has had more headaches than it should: incomplete installations in the past, installers quitting or getting fired mid-job (leaving things confusing), and this most recent project had major delays.I told my sales rep about all the prior issues and was assured "things have changed and the team is now the strongest it's ever been." Unfortunately, the delays this time were the worst yet.If you need one of the most affordable custom options and have some patience, JL is worth considering.

I recently purchased a new, high-end condo in Boca Raton and hired JL Closets to build 4 closet systems in my unit. At the outset, I presented the JL Closets designer with both detailed CAD files from the developer (which illustrate not only dimensions, but also the location of the plumbing and electrical systems in the unit) and actual photos from the unit illustrating the unique structures present. Despite multiple conversations over email and by videoconference, my "designer" ignored many of the unique structural specifications of the unit (columns, access panels, electrical outlets, etc.) and never visited the property in person. Eventually, a senior operations manager visited my unit to make corrections to the plan and prepare for installation. On the first day of my installation, the JL closets installers required three separate electrical changes that were supposed to have been covered in the plan and in one of my closets, I discovered that the installer had partially covered up an access panel that was clearly visible in the photos and on the CAD files. But the worst disaster came when a JL Closets installer drove a screw into a wall and struck several water pipes that were clearly marked on the plans. Water immediately gushed out of the pipes onto the ceiling, walls and floors and flowed into several locations in my brand-new home. Unfortunately, the JL installer did not properly consult the building plans or examine the wall and also selected a three-inch screw (double the length typically required and utilized for this type of job, according to senior JL Closets operations personnel) to penetrate the wall and eventually, the water pipe. After shutting off the water in my unit, I was left to call a water restoration company on my own to begin remediation. With the water turned off in my unit for days and loud fans running water remediation equipment, I was forced to move my family (including my toddler) to alternative living arrangements at my own expense. JL Closets offered a muted, one sentence apology by email and offered no acute assistance to my family. In the days that followed, I was forced to manage my own reconstruction project entirely on my own and had to hire a plumber, drywaller, painter, etc... After sending the first bills for water remediation services to the company's owner and his team directly, I was told to contact the company's insurance provider myself. JL Closets refused to pay the bills and then deal with their own insurance provider. I was forced to spend significant time collecting detailed reports before engaging in a back-and-forth conversation with the insurance adjuster until a claim was finally settled so that I could reimburse myself for thousands of dollars of out-of-pocket expenses. The owner of JL Closets, who very much embodies the "Man Behind the Curtain" did not call me when his team damaged my new, expensive home and refused to grant me an audience with him for weeks. When I finally did speak to the owner, he was the opposite of apologetic. The owner asked me why I needed to hire so many contractors--a remarkably aloof statement that illustrated his lack of general awareness as to the problem his team had created. When I asked why JL Closets had not offered any general contracting assistance, the owner told me that I had "volunteered to run the project" myself when I hired the emergency water remediation company. I remain stunned by this response and lack of accountability / responsibility / sincere apology. When I hire any vendor for my home, I am looking for peace of mind knowing that if there is a problem, the vendor will promptly rectify it. Prospective customers should be well aware that if JL Closets makes a minor or catastrophic error in your home, you will be responsible for managing the fix. In my case, the mistakes that were made could easily have been avoided if the company had spent the proper time to consult the building plans and perform basic due diligence prior to attempting an installation. Buyer Beware!
