Lawn Health and Mowing
Proper mowing is important to the health of a lawn. By encouraging turf grasses to grow more densely and increase their efficient usage of sunlight and ground nutrients, mowing helps grass form its own natural barrier to weeds. The best height at which to maintain grass varies by type, but a general rule applying to all grasses is to never remove more than one third of the leaf height in any mowing session. Grasses that spread horizontally are usually maintained at shorter lengths than those that grow vertically.
