How the Size of Your Room Affects Your Speaker's Performance

The most important factor in determining how well your speakers will perform is their power level in relation to the size of your room. If the room containing your home theater system is smaller than 150 square feet, you’ll probably want to go with speakers that produce less than 500 watts of power. Anything more than that will overpower your room and sound confused and muddled. If your room is between 150 and 300 square feet, then you should look for a system between 500 and 1,000 watts. If your room is larger than 300 square feet, you’ll want a system that’s 1,000 watts or more. Additionally, if your room is over 200 square feet large, you may want to consider installing a powered subwoofer. Of course, a qualified home theater contractor will be able to assist you in finding a system that meets your needs.
