Wood Floors and Weather

As winter approaches, you may begin to notice some separation between the boards of your floor. This is caused by a change in the amount of moisture in the air. During the winter, when homes are heated and the air is dryer, the wood will begin to part with some of its moisture and shrink in response. Then, when the heat gets turned off and the air contains more moisture, the boards will swell back to their original size. In the meantime, you may get gaps between the wood slats. This is entirely normal and not a cause for concern. If you want to minimize the separation that occurs, you’ll need to add moisture to the air. The most effective way to accomplish this is to use a humidifier.
