Surfacing Asphalt Driveways

Asphalt surfaces are available in many different textures and mixtures. A reputable contractor will be able to discuss with you which blends of materials will work best for your area. The slick, smooth surface that most homeowners desire of a blacktop driveway requires that the asphalt material be mixed with a very small aggregate (rocks). This unfortunately creates a weaker form of asphalt. To remedy this the installer may have to install the surface in two layers. The first layer will be slightly thicker and  with somewhat larger rocks, while the topmost layer will be thinner with smaller rocks and coarse sand. The completed surface should have a slope of at least ¼ inch per foot.
