Water Damage

Water damage is the most common type of home damage and accounts for about 25 percent of all insurance claims. Typical homeowners’ insurance policies will cover water damage caused by defects inside the home. Clean water damage is usually covered under a regular homeowner insurance policy, whereas outside water damage or sewage damage requires an additional rider. A separate rider is also needed to cover sump pump and ejector pump failure. Flooding caused by an outside source—say a rising river or overflowing storm drain—must be dealt with by a separate flood insurance policy. Homeowners are always encouraged to have separate flood insurance in areas where there is the potential of flooding.
