Pack yourself. Packing costs account for a large portion of a full-service move. If you have the time and skill to pack items like plates, glasses, and picture frames, you can save a lot of money. However, remember that the moving company is not responsible for damage to items you pack yourself, unless the box shows visible physical damage at time of delivery.

Move in the middle of the month. The moving industry is usually busiest at the beginning and end of the month; most closings and lease expirations occur at these times. If you can move in the middle of the month, you may get both a better price and better service.
