At Home During the Remodel

Planning meals. If you are planning to remain in your home while your kitchen is being remodeled, you will have to find an alternate place to eat and prepare food. For this reason, you may want to consider scheduling the remodel during a time when the weather is nice enough to eat outside if you own a grill and have an outdoor seating area.

It can also be helpful to set up a small, temporary food station in an unaffected room of the house with things like a coffee maker, some nonperishables, a mini refrigerator, and a toaster or mini microwave. Also be sure to have plenty of paper plates and disposable cups and utensils on hand if you will not have access to a dishwasher.

Dining at restaurants is also an option, but you should factor the expense into your budget. If you have relatives in a nearby area, they may be able to offer a nice alternative place to spend time as well.

Dealing with noise. Home renovations can often be very noisy with the use of tools like saws and hammers. If you will be in the house while that kind of work is taking place and loud noises bother you or will disrupt work being done, it may be worth purchasing some earplugs or noise-canceling headphones.

Keeping kids and pets safe. While contractors will usually do their best to confine their work strictly to the areas being renovated and keep safety hazards to a minimum, it is still imperative that your pets and kids are closely watched and kept away from the work being done in order to avoid accidents or injuries. Do your best to keep pets and kids in unaffected rooms. Scheduling play dates or visits with relatives is also a good idea for keeping your children out of harm’s way.
